The Site
A large zoological park rated as #3 inthe U. S. by the American Zoological Society. The system is located inside the 2nd largest indoor jungle exhibit inthe world.
The Problem
The pigmy hippo exhibit includes asmall pond for animal play. The pondmust be continually treated to maintain clarity. A centrifugal separator, a rotating screenand a filter bag were installed to protect the media beds from excessiveloading. These systems failed due to thehigh loading and the changing particle consistency. Automatic cleaning cycles were needed toprevent excessive labor costs.
System Description
A 4 x 3" filter battery was chosento filter 300 gpm. Due to the cost of conditioning the pondwater for pH, hardness and clarity, an external source backwash waschosen. A one-week pilot test determinedthat 130-micron filtration allowed for the longest run time on the downstreammedia.
