Wire that is straightened and cut to length is called rod (see Rod/Bar). Wire is available with cross sections other than round, such as flat wire, used in place of narrow slit strip, and square wire, used in electronic contacts where wire wrapping requires sharp corners for reliable contact.
Brush Wellman supplies wire in diameters from 0.050” to 0.500”. Fine wire, below 0.050”, can be supplied either by special order from Brush Wellman or from any one of a number of copper beryllium wire redrawers.
Rod is supplied in straight lengths for machining into finished components by the user. is available in sizes ranging from 0.030" to 6.0" diameter, and in lengths up to 12'. ToughMet® rod is available in sizes ranging from 1" up to 9", and in lengths up to 12'.
Bar is also produced in straight lengths, but has a cross section other than round. Square, rectangular and hexagonal are the most common.
Copper beryllium tube comes in a wide range of diameter/wall thickness combinations. These range from ultra-thin wall configurations produced by tube redrawing specialists, to light wall cold drawn tube, to heavy wall hot worked product.
ToughMet® tube is available in sizes ranging from 1" up to 23” for cast product, and up to 6.5” for wrought product.
Plate is a straight length of flat rolled product thicker than 0.188” and wider than 12”. Plate is available in solution annealed (A), cold rolled (H), and age hardened tempers (AT and HT). Temper selection depends on the application and the method of component fabrication. If the “A” or “H” temper is selected, parts are usually machined oversize to accommodate the slight dimensional change that occurs during age hardening. The parts are then finish machined.
